The first of the smog era Trans Ams. Engine size was upped to 455 cubes as compression dropped to accommodate low lead and no lead gasoline. The LS5 motor was available in the Firebird Formula and Trans Am, functional hood scoops continued to be avaiable on the both models. The LS5 dropped 5 net horsepower compared to the 1971 model year due to stricter pollution laws.
